Hope Through Research
Considering a Cancer Clinical Trial?
If you or a loved one is living with cancer, you may be exploring all available options – including clinical trials. At Southern Oncology Clinical Research Unit, we conduct safe, carefully monitored oncology trials to test promising new treatments and improve care for future patients.
Whether you’re newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or managing cancer long term, we’re here to help you understand what trials are available and whether one may be right for you.
What are Clinical Trials?
Clinical trials are carefully designed medical research studies that test new ways to prevent, detect, treat, or manage diseases—including cancer.

The Four Trial Phases
Clinical trials are a vital component of advancing safer, more effective treatments and enhancing the overall quality of patient care. They are conducted in four distinct phases, each designed to evaluate a different stage of drug development.
- Phase I: Is it Safe?
First time a new treatment is tested in people, focusing on safety, optimal dosing, and side effects in a small group of participants (15-30) under close medical supervision. - Phase II: Does it Work?
Assess whether a treatment has an effect on cancer in a larger group of participants (up to 100+), while continuing to monitor safety and side effects. - Phase III: Is It Better Than What We Have?
Compare the new treatment to the current standard of care in hundreds or thousands of participants across multiple sites, confirming its effectiveness and monitoring side effects. - Phase IV: Long-Term Safety and Use
Take place after a treatment is approved and available, evaluating its long-term effectiveness and safety in real-world settings.
At SOCRU, we specialise in Phase I trials, which are a critical first step in bringing new cancer treatments to patients.
Although the primary goal is not to cure cancer at this stage, your participation can help pave the way for future breakthroughs.

Support Resources for Patients and Caregivers
Being diagnosed with cancer can be life-changing, and navigating the emotional, physical, and practical challenges can feel overwhelming. While we don’t offer direct support services, we’ve gathered trusted external resources to help guide you through every stage of your journey.
These resources are designed primarily for patients, with information on treatment, wellbeing, and day-to-day living. Many also offer dedicated support for caregivers, who play a vital role in the care experience.
